I’m not your average teacher...

I love & teach most styles of music.

Not only do I love the classics, I love to improvise! And to quote the great Duke Ellington, “There are only two kinds of music, good and bad”.
I have many years of experience performing all kinds of popular music. Classical, Country, Jazz, Rock & Roll, fiddling, and our own originals. I traveled the United States, Canada, and England professionally for many years performing with my band, the Cheryl Cotton Show.

What does this mean to the student?

I have a flair and unique ability to help students:

* Prepare students and incorporate their instrument in a play or talent show.

* Prepare for classical auditions, honor orchestras, solo and ensemble contests, and recitals.

*  Unique Ensemble Opportunities -
Every Christmas and Easter, I put together a children’s orchestra. This is a very rare opportunity for children to perform outside of school.

    Professional Recording Available
                    ~by appointment only~
When it is time to prepare that audition tape or special song on cd, I can teach the student how to properly record his or her piece of music to sound as professional as possible.

My favorite classical violinist is still Itzhak Perlman.
My favorite fiddler is still Johnny Gimble.
My favorite jazz fiddlers are Stephane Grapelli, and Darol Anger of the David Grissman Quintet.
During middle and high school I was concertmaster. I studied with Anna Tringas in Pensacola, Florida. During my junior and senior years, I was the youngest member of the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra. It was during this time that the great Arthur Fiedler, of the Boston Pops Orchestra, came and conducted the Huntsville Symphony. At this time I studied with Dr. Marx Pales.
After high school, I attended Texas Tech University studying the classics under the esteemed Dr. James Barber. He is still my hero. At that time I was a member of the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra.
On the weekends, I started playing in bands and even got to sit in with some professional bands such as the origional Bob Will’s Texas Playboys in Turkey, Texas.  After that, “Take it away Leon” McAuliff personally flew me in his twin engine Beechcraft airplane to Kerrville Texas to perform again with the band. By this time I was winning many fiddling contests.
I had the opportunity to sit in with the band, Asleep at the Wheel, and country legend, Merle Haggard wanted to hire me on the spot after I jammed with his band back stage. I declined the invitation, opting to finish my degree.
1980 -1986
Upon graduation, I immediately started touring with my own band across our great nation. I opened shows for B.J. Thomas (Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head) and Donna Fargo (I’m The Happiest Girl In The Whole USA). I also backed up such artists as Ferlin Huskey (On The Wings Of A Snow White Dove), Susan Raye (L.A. International Airport), Charlie Pride (Is Anybody Goin’ To San Antone), Sammi Smith (Help Me Make It Through The Night), Tex Williams (Smoke Smoke Smoke That Cigarette), Freddy Hart (Easy Lovin’), Hank Thompson (Six Pack To Go) and Hee Haw’s Hagar Twins.
It was during this time, in the early 1980’s that I received the RAMA (Reno Area’s Music Awards) Best Country Female Vocalist of the year.
Playing more than one instrument has always come easy to me. Besides every style on the violin/fiddle, I doubled on piano, guitar, mandolin, trumpet, flute, and played the cello solo in the song Live & Let Die.
Some of my newer music finds are:
*Haley Westenra
*Jane Monheit
*The Brian Setzer big band
*The Big Bad Voodoo Daddy swing band
*Michael Buble’
I enjoyed the honor of being on the cover of Fun and Gaming magazine while performing at the Peppermill Hotel & Casino. Although ‘big hair’ wasn’t the norm for me, it was fun once in a while. I loved to perform our origional recordings composed by singer, songwriter, arranger, Joseph DeRosa. My country album, Sweet Impression got air play as well as our Christmas single, Little Ones Love Christmas. This was featured on a news special by Lise Mousel.
We also enjoyed performing the Andrews Sister’s music, Patsy Cline, Aretha Franklin, and the jazz standards.
We loved the sweet simplicity of James Taylor. He remains our personal favorite to this day.
Since I doubled on many instruments, we played intricate medleys from The Moody Blues, Seals and Crofts, the Marshall Tucker Band, Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, Santana, Steely Dan and so many more.
You would probably see a standing ovation if you caught my show when I performed my specialty, Charlie Daniels’ The Devil Went Down To Georgia. Embellished with my own improvisations, every performance was unique, and it still remains one of a kind.
